Alternative Options for Mortgage Relief Assistance

Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Mortgage Assistance: FHFA is committed to supporting homeowners who have been affected by housing instability. Through government programs, they offer resources to improve financial housing situations and resolve issues with the entities they regulate, such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks. Homeowners facing economic hardship are encouraged to contact their mortgage servicer for payment relief options.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Homeowner Assistance Funds: For homeowners who don’t qualify for the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) but are facing financial difficulties, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) offers guidance on mortgage forbearance. Forbearance allows homeowners to pause or reduce mortgage payments temporarily. Eligibility requires experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic, and it’s applicable to federally backed and some non-federally backed mortgages. The initial forbearance period typically lasts 3 to 6 months, with possible extensions. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their mortgage servicer and consider consulting a HUD-approved housing counselor for personalized assistance and planning.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): HUD offers various programs targeting undeserved communities and veterans, including counseling services, financial aid, and specific mortgage relief options. For detailed information and to find specific programs, visit the HUD website.
Streamline Refinancing for FHA and USDA Loans: Homeowners with federally backed FHA and USDA mortgages may qualify for Streamline Refinancing. This program allows for refinancing without the need for re-verifying income and employment or getting the home appraised. It is designed to help homeowners refinance their mortgages to lower interest rates and reduce monthly payments, even if they have little, no, or negative home equity.
VA Housing Assistance: For veterans, the VA provides mortgage assistance programs that can help with loan forbearance, loan modification, and other relief options designed to prevent foreclosure. These programs are designed to offer targeted support to ensure that these communities receive the help they need in managing their mortgage payments and maintaining housing stability. For detailed information, visit the VA official website.
